I’m not sure which was harder during those last few months that my father was on Hospice: watching the brilliant, vivacious man I had known as my dad wither away, or experiencing the fear and frustration of my mother, in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, insisting that she could take care of him. It was heart wrenching and scary knowing that my mother, former RN, organizer par excellant and gracious hostess, was becoming angry and defensive when my dad would mention that she had given her meds to him. The week just before my father’s passing, he looked at me with panic in his eyes and said, “I won’t be here to take care of her much longer”
